MEDICAL

WELCOME TO THE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT
The objective of this department is to survey the health of our members and offer assistance to the community whenever possible. To that end, we will present a monthly article on health issues that affect our community, and we will have an “Ask Your Pharmacist” question and answer section. In the “Ask Your Pharmacist” section below you can ask our Maceo Elks Leader and registered pharmacist, William R Elliott any question about your medications or general pharmaceutical questions and he will respond to you confidentially through email.
Prioritizing Mental Health to Strengthen the Community – June 4, 2024
Many people have been conditioned to suppress, or disregard thoughts and emotions. They can be labeled as too sensitive, over-emotional, under-emotional, and emotionless. As mental health has become more of a household and community topic, we are able to recognize the differences between mental wellness and mental illness. We are more accepting of people’s experiences and allowing more openness to share stories. Let’s be mindful that everyone’s perspective on their life is unique and their capacity to cope with life’s wins and losses is on a spectrum.“
We enter this world with no control over our families or environments. Factors such as physical and mental health histories, the economy, the political climate, just to name a few, can compound and overwhelm many circumstances. Yet, these potential stressors do not equate to a mental illness. Mental illness causes a significant impairment in a person’s daily functioning in many areas of life. Therapy and medication can improve the ability to cope and have hope that life can be better.
We are introduced to situations and circumstances that can strengthen or weaken our ability to be resilient. Resiliency allows us to bounce back or recover from life’s challenges. Resiliency teaches us lessons to address our needs and live a fulfilled life. Challenges will always come, but we can overcome with the appropriate support.
Seeking support for mental health has been seen as a weakness in the past. More and more people are acknowledging the strength of building your tribe. Those in your tribe can include family, friends, clinicians, neighbors, and anyone a person feels comfortable opening up to in an honest. Seek support in your home and in your community to help you cope. Getting support can reveal keys to your wellness and wholeness.
Think about what you are thinking about, how it impacts you emotionally, and engage in self-reflection. Sharing your experiences allows others to learn from you. Provide a brave space for others to be vulnerable with experiencing mental health challenges. When people gather with similar goals of being healthy, individuals and the community can thrive.
